Communication Tips for Special Situations
Good Listening skills can often make a difference between simply hearing words and actually understanding them. Here are a few helpful tips!
Television:
Remember that volume differs from station to station and from program to program; use closed captioning and reduce competing background noise.
Restaurants:
Sit at round tables or in booths away from the kitchen or doorways; remove centerpieces so you can see everyone’s face, and try not to sit under fans and speakers playing music.
Lectures/Sermons:
Sit close to the speaker so you can watch their face and body language; use your telecoil or other assistive listening devices if the room is equipped with a loop system; tape record and re-listen to the program later.
In the Car:
Turn the radio down or off, and remember, everyone may need to speak louder especially if they are in the back seat and you are in the front!
On the Phone:
Position the phone receiver correctly over the microphone or telecoil of your hearing aid; try an amplified telephone – you are entitled to a free one from the California Telephone Access Program (ask you audiologist for an application).
